Join the fun!

Meet us in the meadow to celebrate some of the most beautiful and beloved insects around- butterflies! Learn about how to use a net to catch butterflies, carefully observe and identify them, and then let them return to the meadow with butterfly expert Dr. Nusha Keyghobadi and her students from Western University. Want to take take the fun home? Take the opportunity to make your very own native wildflower seed ball, which can help you attract butterflies into your backyard. While you're here, check out our activity tents to play games, make crafts, and learn more about the butterflies of southern Ontario. All ages are welcome to join! This free, drop-in event is the perfect opportunity to get outside and have some family fun.

Event Information

Registration: There's no registration required for this event. Drop in any time between 11 AM and 2 PM to join the festivities!

Transportation: There are a few bus routes that stop near the event site in Meadowlily Nature Preserve, which you can find information on here. Bus tickets will be available at the event to cover the cost of transit.

Parking: Parking is available on Meadowlily Rd S, as well as north of Meadowlily Nature Preserve on Norlan Ave. To get to the event site from Norlan Ave, you will need to walk south across the footbridge over the Thames River, where you will then find Meadowlily Nature Preserve to the west. 

Apparel: Please wear close-toed shoes, such as hiking shoes, hiking boots, rubber boots, and/or other sturdy and waterproof shoes. If possible, wear light-coloured clothing, bring a hat to protect against the sun, and tuck your pants into your socks. 

Conditions and Safety: The event will take place off-trail in a natural meadow with grasses and flowers. The terrain may be uneven and wet in areas. As we will be exposed to the sun, it will be important to take precautions to prevent heat distress. We will provide tents, which can offer shelter from the sun, as well as water, juice, and snacks to help with the heat. It is possible that you may encounter ticks at this nature reserve. Make sure to check for ticks before leaving the event and again once you arrive home. More information on ticks can be found here.
